Archimedes Biography
Archimedes who lived in Greece in the year 287 to 212 BC, was a mathematician, physicist, astronomer as well as philosophers. Archimedes was born in the port city called Syracuse, the city is now known as Sicily. Archimedes is a nephew of King Hiero II, who reigned in Syracuse at the time. He was killed by a Roman soldier on Syracusa looting the city, despite orders from the Roman general, Marcellus that he should not be harmed. Some historians of mathematics look at Archimedes as one of the greatest mathematicians of history, perhaps together with Newton and Gauss.
Archimedes name became famous after he jumped from the tub and ran naked after proving that the king's crown was not made of pure gold. Description of "Eureka (I found it)" became popular to this day. Archimedes is also the first person who defines the system of numbers that contain "Myriad (10000)", indicating myramid compare the number whose value is infinite. He also defines the ratio between the circumference of a circle and the radius of the circle known as Pi of 3.1429.
King Hiero II, and then bound into an agreement with the Romans. Syracuse must deliver grain in large quantities in Rome, so they are not attacked. Until one day when Hiero II can no longer send a certain amount of wheat. Therefore commissioned Archimedes to design and create new types of ships to reinforce the naval king Hiero II. At that time, the ship made by Archimedes was the largest ship. To be able to float, the ship must be dry before water flooded the deck. Because of the size of this vessel, the amount of water that must dipindahkanpun very much. Because ituArchimedes created a device called "Archimedes Screw". With this water can be easily aspirated from the deck of the ship. The size of a large ship which also cause other problems. The mass of a heavy ship, causing it difficult to move. To overcome this, re-creating Archimedes pulley system called "Compound Pulley." With this system, and the crew of the ship and its cargo can be moved simply by pulling the rope. The ship was later named Syracusia, and became the most phenomenal ships of that era.
During the war with the Romans, known as the second punik war, Archimedes again made a large contribution. Archimedes designed a number of means of defense to prevent the Roman troops under the command of Marcus Claudius Marcellus, seized Syracuse.
When the Roman fleet of 120 ships began appearing on the horizon Syracuse. Archimedes to think hard to prevent the enemy along the coast. Archimedes then tried to burn the Roman ships, using a mirror composed of shield-shield soldiers Syracuse. Archimedes is planning to set fire to enemy ships by focusing the sun's rays. But this plan seems less successful. This is due to obtain the amount of heat sufficient to burn a ship, the ship must be silent.
Although the results were less satisfactory, with this tool Archimedes managed to dazzle Rome until they find it difficult to shoot. Ditimbulkn heat with this tool also managed to make enemies swelter, until they were tired before dealing with Syrcuse troops.
When the enemy began to surround the coast of Syracuse, Archimedes returned to rack my brain. The aim this time is to find a way to sink the ships of this Roman. Archimedes then created a device called a claw of Archimedes. This tool looks like a crane in the present. Once the tool is secretly related to the agency the enemy ships, cranes and then withdrawn. Akibanya enemy ships will be shaky, or even torn and drowning.
Apart from the two instruments Archimedes also developed catapults and ballista against Rome. But unfortunately, although supported by the discovery of Archimedes, Syracuse still less powerful than the Roman army. Archimedespun eventually killed by the Romans. We killed Archimedes was working on the problem by describing the geometry of the circle on the ground. Before he was killed by Roman soldiers shouted "Do not disturb my circles!
